Recently-developed technology for production of polysaccharides from marine sources makes their potential use as additives in pharmacological formulations, food supplements, and support material for biomedical implants a real possibility. Although development of low-cost and eco-friendly methods remains a challenge, many companies have developed methodologies for extraction and purification of high quantities of polysaccharides from a variety of natural sources, as confirmed by the high number of trademarks that have been registered to date. Moreover, refinements of technological approaches enable further exploitation of available resources.
